Shopping in Second Life

Random Shop that caught my attention

E-Learning Activity: Shopping on second Life

Today, I went and visited a shop in second life for my cds e-learning activity.
a) Products and Services offered:
The store displayed various clothing and accessories for your avatar and they provide pictures and rotating videos of their products being modeled by a player model.

b)The Shopping environment (Look and Feel)
Classical Music was being played as i entered the place even though i have no idea what the title was. However, the overview of the store was designed as if it were a real store in mall. And you can find many similar features in there as a normal clothing store.

One thing I like about this virtual experience which I am unable to get in real life:
Flying. Period.

Experience on Second Life when compared to Online Shopping
My Shopping experience on Second Life feels as normal as playing a normal online game that allows you to customise your avatar looks by selecting different clothing. The main difference when comparing the both of them is the fact that when I am shopping online I know I am purchasing a real item that i can use. However, shopping in second life requires you to spend real cash to purchase game points to purchase the clothing.
Seeing this will never be on the list of things I would want to do during my free time, spending cash on this game will not be a option that I would consider. Although the shops were kind of interesting at first, i don't see myself spending time on this in the future.

What I gained from this experience
The only thing I probably gained from this experience, is learning how to make use of the teleport functions and how to navigate around the game world in order to reach and discover different places.

Most Challenging Experience:
Finding a shop. LOL.

If I had $500

Razer Lycosa™ Gaming Keyboard (Mirror Special Edition) Price: 129SGD

Razer Lachesis (Wraith Red) Price: 95SGD

If I had $500, I would buy those items for myself, the remaining money will probably be in my wallet until sometime later.

b) The shopping websites which i have visited include allowing users to bid for items at a lower retail price and also standard sites such as footlocker.com that sell shoes at a standard retail price.

ebay.com:
1. Allows users to bid for item usually starting at price lower than those at retail outlets
2. However, items are most likely 2nd-hand unless stated otherwise
3. Allows users to purchase "limited-edition" products that cannot be usually found at local retail outlets
4. Sometimes, "rare" items can be purchased there for "hardcore" collectors

Footlocker.com
1.Standard everyday shoe shopping site
2. Stock up on mostly casual shoes
3. Wider variety of shoes compared to local retail outlets
4. Can be quite pricey due to shipping costs

c)From the above findings and a brief understanding of the online shopping websites I had visited, I learnt that:

  • Shopping online has it's risks as the quality of the product cannot be determined beforehand
  • Defected Products may not be returned
  • Conditions of the product as stated online by the owner may not be trustworthy
  • Sometimes, country/region may be a problem due to long delivery time/currency conversion
  • However, shopping online is useful as some people may not have the time for leisurely shopping for their items outside or some people may be affected by their body conditions, therefore online grocery shopping is a very good option for the handicapped.
